Belmont Park Halts Racing As Wildfires Spread

Belmont Stakes Canceled Due to Air Quality Concerns

Belmont Park Halts Racing as Wildfires Spread

Poor air quality from wildfires in Canada and New York has forced the cancellation of live racing at Belmont Park on Long Island.

The Belmont Stakes, scheduled for Saturday, is still expected to take place, but the track's management is monitoring the air quality closely. The conditions that necessitated the cancellation of training on Thursday are likely to persist this afternoon and into the evening.

Racing will resume at Belmont Park on Friday after the New York Racing Association (NYRA) consulted with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The DEC has advised that the air quality is expected to improve by Friday.

The 155th edition of the Belmont Stakes is still scheduled for Saturday, but the NYRA is prepared to cancel the race if the air quality does not improve. The NYRA is committed to the safety of its horses, jockeys, and fans, and will not hesitate to cancel the race if necessary.
